Dehradun, Mar 21, 2022: Pushkar Singh Dhami is set to continue as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. The decision was announced after the meeting of the BJP’s legislature party in Dehradun on Monday, March 21. The BJP’s central observers for the state, Union minister Rajnath Singh, and senior leader Meenakshi Lekhi were part of the meeting at the state party headquarters in Dehradun.

The announcement by Defence minister Rajnath Singh ended the 11-day suspense over who will become the CM of the state.

"Pushkar Singh Dhami has been elected as the Leader of the Legislative Party. I congratulate him, I am confident that under his leadership Uttarakhand will make rapid progress," Rajnath Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.

Pushkar Singh Dhami will take oath as the Uttarkhand CM on March 23.

The Bharatiya Janata Party retained power in Uttarakhand for a second consecutive term after winning 46 seats in the recently concluded state assembly polls. However, Pushkar Singh Dhami lost from his Khatima constituency in Udhamsingh Nagar district. Pushkar Singh Dhami, who had won two consecutive terms from here in 2012 and 2017, lost the election to Congress candidate Bhuwan Chandra Kapri by a margin of 6,579 votes.

He resigned from his post of Uttarakhand CM on March 11.

However, a section of BJP leaders credit Dhami for the party’s big win in the state Assembly polls and wanted him to be the chief minister again so that he gets a full five-year term to deliver on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of development for the state.

Pushkar Singh Dhami was the frontrunner among around half a dozen names doing the rounds for the top post. The names of Chaubattakhal MLA Satpal Maharaj, Shrinagar MLA Dhan Singh Rawat and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni were also doing rounds.

A day before, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chaired a meeting at his residence over the formation of the Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Uttarakhand governments.
