New Delhi, Feb 05, 2022: Amid growing controversy over the wearing of hijab in educational institutes, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the nation is robbing the future of the girl students by letting the issue come in way of their education.“By letting students’ hijab come in the way of their education, we are robbing the future of the daughters of India. Ma Saraswati gives knowledge to all. She doesn’t differentiate,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.There is an ongoing row over wearing hijab by some students at a government pre-university college in Karnataka.
The hijab row that started in a college in Udupi spilled over to other schools across the district. A government college in Kundapura asked girl students not to come to college wearing hijabs.A number of Hindu students, mostly boys, came to college wearing saffron shawls, as a counter to the Muslim girls wearing hijabs.
With the issue snowballing into a major controversy spreading to other educational institutions, and the matter coming up before the High Court, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai held a meeting on Friday with Primary and Secondary Education Minister B C Nagesh and top government officials, regarding the government’s stand.
Congress leader Siddaramaiah threw his weight behind Muslim girls on their right to wear the hijab to educational institutions, and hit out at the BJP government.
On February 8, the Karnataka High Court will hear the petitions filed by five girls studying in a Government Pre-university College in Udupi, questioning hijab restriction in college.
