Rahul Gandhi’s landslide win in Wayanad and Raebareli seats

New Delhi, June 5, 2024: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi registered a decisive victory in Wayanad and Raebareli constituencies. Gandhi won both Lok Sabha seats with a margin of over 3 lakh votes.

In Wayanad, the Congress leader, who is also the sitting MP, beat his nearest CPI rival, veteran leader Annie Raja, with 3,64,422 votes, according to the Election Commission of India.

K Surendran, the BJP candidate and the party chief in Kerala, came at distant third with 1.41 lakh votes.

The India Today-Axis My India exit poll has predicted that Rahul Gandhi was strongly placed in the Lok Sabha contest in Wayanad and may win a successive term.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Rahul Gandhi won in Wayanad, securing a significant mandate with 706,367 votes. His closest rival, PP Suneer of the CPI, garnered 274,597 votes.

Meanwhile, in Congress bastion Raebaraeli, Rahul Gandhi defeated BJP rival Dinesh Pratap Singh, a minister in the Yogi Adityanath cabinet in Uttar Pradesh, with over 3 lakh votes.

According to the Election Commission, the Congress MP has surpassed his mother Sonia Gandhi’s victory margin in Raebareli in 2019, when she won the seat by a margin of 1,67,178 votes against Dinesh Pratap Singh.

However, the BJP candidate has conceded defeat to Rahul Gandhi, and apologised to the people of Raebareli.

"I served the God-like people of Raebareli with great humility and hard work. However, if I have made any mistake in my thoughts, words or deeds during my service or have hurt anyone, then I seek forgiveness from the people of Raebareli," he said in a Facebook post.

Raebareli went to the polls on May 20, the fifth phase of the 2024 general elections.

The Raebareli constituency was represented by Sonia Gandhi from 2004 to 2024 and is seen as the traditional pocket borough of the Gandhi-Nehru family. The seat was also previously held by Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
