Rain alert in Kerala, showers to bring respite from heat in Delhi today

New Delhi, June 8, 2024: An orange alert for rain has been issued for several parts of Kerala between June 8 to 11, while several parts of north India, including Delhi, are likely to witness very light to light rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) on June 8 (Saturday).

A duststorm and thundersquall is forecast in West Rajasthan on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

In the next 24 hours, fairly widespread to widespread squalls accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep, according to the weather department.

Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted in south interior Karnataka from June 8 and 9 and in Telangana on June 10.

The Met Department said that coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may witness isolated light to moderate rainfall during the next four days.

Scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds ranging from 30-40 kmph are likely in Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh during the next three to four days.

In the Northeast, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds is likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, parts of West Bengal and Sikkim over the next week or so.

Meanwhile, several parts of north and northwest India were still reeling from a severe heatwave as maximum temperatures were recorded in the range of 43-46 degrees Celsius in pockets of Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. These were above normal temperatures by at least two to four degrees Celsius over these areas, according to the IMD.

Heatwave conditions were forecast in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand from June 8 to 11, in Bihar on June 9 and 10 and in Odisha, Punjab, and Haryana between June 9 and 11.

Isolated to scattered very light to light rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds was possible in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan on June 8.
