Mangalore Today News Network

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Union Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu flagged off the train at Magadi Road station. The main event was held at the Mysuru Road station and was attended by more than 200 people, consisting mostly of political workers and a handful of citizens.

There are six stations on this line — Magadi Road, Hosahalli, Vijayanagar, Attiguppe, Deepanjalinagar and Mysuru Road. The Magadi Road-Mysuru Road line (Reach 2) is part of east-west corridor which stretches from Baiyappanahalli to Mysuru Road under Phase 1.

The underground section (Cubbon Park to Majestic) on this corridor will be ready by March 2016, according to officials. This means, people living in eastern parts of Bengaluru will be able to travel without hassles to the western business district which has hundreds of offices and professionals working there. It will also be a boon to software professionals who work in Whitefield but stay in the western parts of Bengaluru. The wait has already been long as several past deadlines have been missed.

The underground section between Mantri Square Sampige Road and KR Market has also been delayed for long. This stretch is part of north-south corridor (Nagasandra-Puttenahalli) under Phase 1. The first phase will get ready when both the underground sections on the east-west and north-south corridors are completed.

Naid stressed the need for parking and cycle sharing space at the metro stations. He said the Centre was working on a Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) for Bengaluru.
The City needs an integrated transport network, including suburban railway.
An integrated ticket for all modes of transport would be ideal, he added.

New deadline

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday announced yet another deadline for the completion of Phase 1 of Namma Metro: June 2016. He had earlier said the first would be ready by April next year. Some of the deadlines given earlier were March 2016 and December 2015.

The chief minister said the Phase 2 would be ready by 2020 and the work on it would begin in another month. Union Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu said Phase 2 of 72 km would cost Rs 26,405 crore and the Centre has granted its share. The State has to bear its share, while the rest of the funds would come from Japan or France.
