Rise against BJP’s authoritarian regime: Sharad Pawar supports Mamata Banerjee in fight against CAA

New Delhi, Dec 31, 2019:  Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said he will support West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s protest against National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the amended Citizenship Act (CAA).

 

"I will be happy to associate myself with any concerted plan to rise against the authoritarian regime of the Central government and for saving our democracy," Sharad Pawar said.

Sharad Pawar wrote a letter responding to the one written by Mamata Banerjee in which she had urged the Opposition leaders to unite and chalk out a plan to "save the country".

"I received your letter dated December 23, 2019, raising serious concern over the current alarming situation across the nation. I totally agree with your concern and pledge to stand in solidarity with all like-minded leaders and parties to protest against the implementation of CAA and nationwide NRC," Sharad Pawar wrote.

Mamata Banerjee, in her letter dated December 23, termed the BJP’s rule at the Centre as a "draconian regime" and said: "Today, more than ever, we need to rise against this draconian regime in a united manner. I sincerely and honestly request all my senior leaders and all the political outfits to stand up against this in a concerted and united manner; let us create peaceful and meaningful opposition to these unholy efforts by the Centre and save India’s democratic soul," she further wrote.

Raising concern over the rights of minorities in the country, she said: "Today, I write this letter to you with grave worries in my mind. The citizens of this country irrespective of caste and creed, particularly the women and children, farmers, workers and members of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, OBCs and minorities are in the grip of fear and panic for the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed nationwide NRC. The situation is very serious."

Sharad Pawar has constantly opposed the CAA saying that the law will disturb and hurt religious, social unity and harmony in the country. He had even questioned why only migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are allowed citizenship under the new Act but not Sri Lankan Tamils.
