London, April 29: Royal wedding: Prince William and Kate Middleton have become a married couple today – as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The pair were pronounced man and wife this morning as millions watched on during a historic fairytale ceremony at Westminster Abbey with 1,900 guests in attendance.
The heir to the throne and the future Queen Catherine, who was wearing a stunning ivory gown with lace applique floral detail designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, tied the knot in a televised service.
An estimated two billion people from around the world watched on as the pair exchanged vows, a decade after they first met at St Andrew’s University in Scotland.
The service was flawless but there was a tiny moment of drama as the prince struggled to place the wedding ring on Kate’s finger.
After the couple said their vows the Archbishop of Canterbury declared: ’I pronounce that they be man and wife together, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.’
Cheers erupted down The Mall and across the country as their union was sealed.
In the presence of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton, William placed Kate’s simple gold wedding band on her finger.
The bride-to-be had arrived at Westminster Abbey exactly at 11am.
She was all smiles as she walked up the aisle accompanied by her father, Michael.
As she approached the front of the church, Harry looked back, cracked a broad smile and said a few words to his brother.
William faced forward until Kate arrived.
The couple looked lovingly at each other as they exchanged a few words, William looking down to admire the length of Kate’s dramatic dress.
Kate Middleton’s 2.7m wedding dress train was shown off as she walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey
The Archbishop asked William: "Wilt thou love her, comfort her, honour and keep her, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all other, keep thee only unto her, so long as ye both shall live?"
William’s voice crackled slightly as he said: "I will."
As Kate said "I will" to the same vows there was a loud cheer from the crowd outside.
Like William’s late mother Princess Diana in her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, Kate did not promise to obey her husband.
