Lucknow, Nov 11, 2016: A day after sacks full of shredded Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes were found burning in Bareilly, hundreds of similar notes were found floating in the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur today.
The UP Police said they were not sure about the exact number of the currency notes floating in the river. They were spotted by people bathing in Ganga near Narghat.
As the news of currency floating in the river spread, crowds at the river swelled too, following which police had to be deployed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a surprise announcement on Tuesday, had said the current Rs. 500 and 1000 notes were being banned to check black or untaxed money. Instead, the Reserve Bank of India has announced new high security Rs. 500 and Rs. 2000 notes.
