New Delhi, Dec 14, 2022: The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday recommended to the Centre the names of five high court judges for appointment as apex court judges.
The recommendation came after the meeting of the six-member Collegium today, led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud. The five names recommended for elevation are Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court; Justice Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice, Patna High Court; Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice, Manipur High Court; Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Judge, Patna High Court; Justice Manoj Misra, Judge, Allahabad High Court.
The Centre had cleared Justice Dipankar Datta’s elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court. After Justice Dutta’s swearing-in ceremony on Monday, the total number of judges in the top court has gone up to 28, leaving six vacancies.
Out of the 28 judges at present, nine are scheduled to retire in 2023.
