SC raps Gujarat govt in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case

New Delhi, Dec 01: The Supreme Court pulled up the Narendra Modi government on Thursday for not handing over the CD’s to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

The apex court had directed the Gujarat government to submit the CDs with call details of senior state police officials allegedly involved in the fake encounter case.

Rapping the state government, the Supreme Court has given the Narendra Modi-led BJP government time till December 7 to submit the CD’s.

Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausarbi were picked up by Gujarat Police while they were travelling to Sangli in Maharashtra from Hyderabad November 22, 2005. On November 26, 2005, Gujarat Police personnel killed Sohrabuddin in a shootout. Kausarbi, missing without a trace since then, is believed to have died under mysterious circumstances a few days later.

Timeline of the case:

Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausarbi were travelling from Hyderabad to Sangli and were apprehended by the Gujarat ATS on November 23, 2005.

It is alleged that Sohrabuddin was gunned down in Ahmedabad on November 26, 2005.

The CID was then asked to investigate the case. Following investigations the CID arrested 13 persons includind DG Vanzara, all of whom are still in judicial custody.

The Supreme Court handed over the case to the CBI January 13, 2010.

On April 28, Crime Branch DCP Abhay Chudasama was arrested and the CBI summoned six IPS for questioning on April 30.

The CBI gets custody of NK Amin and V Rathod on May 20.

Who was Sohrabuddin:

Sohrabuddin was a resident of Jharnia village in Madhya Pradesh and he had a criminal record. He allegedly operated from Udaipur, Ahmedabad and Ujjain.

There were reports that he was wanted for extortion. However, contrary to that, certain sources said that he was a police informer turned rogue.
