SP set to form next UP govt; Akalis-BJP retain Punjab; Cong retain Manipur, BJP-MGP wrest Goa

Lucknow, March 6, 2012: The Samajwadi Party is all set to form the next government in Uttar Pradesh. Riding on a wave in its favour, the Mulayam Singh-led SP has won/leads in 223 out of the total 403 seats.  Mulayam’s son Akhilesh has already declared that his father would be the next Chief Minister.  The Bahujan Samaj Party, which had secured a majority of its own in 2007, has been routed this time around with wins/leads in only 80 seats. As per reports, Mayawati will head towards the Raj Bhavan later today to tender her resignation.

Congress scores hat trick in Manipur
Manipur: The Congress Tuesday stormed back to power in Manipur by winning 34 of the 50 seats for which results were declared till 4 p.m. Tuesday. The state assembly has 60 seats. Sources in the state election office said that of the others, the Trinamool Congress won seven seats followed by the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) with four seats. The Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) has won three seats so far. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) have secured one seat each.


Majority for SAD-BJP in Punjab;
Chandigarh: Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) alliance Tuesday secured a majority in the 117-member assembly, winning 59 seats in the results announced till 3 p.m.

It may be BJP-Congress tie in Uttarakhand
DEHRADUN: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress were locked in a nail-biting seesaw battle as Uttarakhand appeared poised for a hung assembly amid no clear winner in the 70-member house. According to the vote counting trends Tuesday evening, the BJP and the Congress were evenly poised. The leads, however, continuously swung between the two parties.

Goa: BJP routs out Congress, Kamat resigns
Panaji: The BJP has routed the Congress out of power in Goa, notching 24 seats. A jubilant Goa BJP leader Manohar Parrikar, who had launched a campaign against the Congress-led government on the issue of illegal mining in the state, declared that he will most likely be the next chief minister of the state. "The Congress has been punished in Goa. I am proud of the fact that I got support from Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike. They have voted to save Goa," he said. He added, "I have given a time schedule which I will follow. In the budget, we will make announcements like petrol VAT and inflation." The Congress has won 9 seats. Chief Minister Digamber Kamat has submitted his resignation.
