New York, Aug 13, 2022: Author Salman Rushdie, who was stabbed multiple times at an event in New York on Friday, will likely lose one eye, his book agent, Andrew Wylie told Reuters. According to Wylie, Rushdie was put on a ventilator after hours of surgery and the nerves in his arms were severed. He added that Rushdie’s liver was stabbed and damaged.
Meanwhile, the New York Police said the suspect who stabbed Rushdie was identified as Hadi Matar (24) from New Jersey. He was arrested by authorities soon after he attacked the author.
Salman Rushdie was stabbed on Friday as he was about to deliver a lecture in western New York’s Chautauqua institute. Rushdie, 75, was stabbed as he was being introduced on stage.
The author was taken by helicopter to a hospital where he underwent surgery to treat his wounds.
Salman Rushdie rose to prominence with his Booker Prize-winning 1981 novel ’Midnight’s Children’, but his name became known around the world after ’The Satanic Verses’. The book has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous.Later, Iran’s late leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death.
Indian-born Rushdie has lived in the US for the past 20 years. After the controversy over his fourth book, The Satanic Verses, he remained out of the public eye, mostly living in the UK. Despite the threats, he produced several novels throughout the 1990s.
The attack on Salman Rushdie was condemned by literary figures across the globe.
