The swift action comes after the radical Sikhs in a grand Sikh congregation organised in Amritsar on Tuesday had announced parallel heads of various seats including the Akal Takht chief.

Radical Sikh leaders had also announced that they will visit Golden Temple on Wednesday. Police sources said the radical Sikhs might have tried to forcibly enter the office of Akal Takht chief Giani Gurbachan Singh to take over the charge.

The Sarbat Khalsa had relieved the Akal Takht chief of his duties and had appointed a jailed Khalistan militant Jagtar Singh Hawara as interim Akal Takht chief. Dhian Singh Mand was announced as an acting Akal Takht chief as Hawara is in jail.

The radical Sikh congregation had pushed the Parkash Singh Badal government into a deeper religio-political crisis after removing four of the five Takht jathedars. The arrests have been made to prevent conflict between the two groups. More arrests are expected on Wednesday.

Radical Sikhs have appealed the Sikh community not to celebrate Diwali following a series of sacrilege incidents.
