Chitradurga, Oct 18, 2022: Basavaprabhu, the pontiff of the Virakta mutt, has been appointed as the in-charge pontiff of the Murugha Mutt in Karnataka’s Chitradurga also. This comes following the arrest of Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru.
Basavaprabhu is also a disciple of Shiva Murthy Sharanaru. The mutt officials appointed him allegedly over fears that the government may appoint someone else. However, Basavapabhu is already the head of the Virakta mutt in the Davangere district.
Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was arrested in September following protests after two minor girls, who were residing in the hostel run by the mutt, accused him of rape. A case was filed on August 26 after the girls had approached a non-governmental organisation in Mysuru.
A total of six people, including the warden of the monastery’s hostel, were accused in the case. The two girls, aged 15 and 16, studying at the school run by the mutt, were sexually abused by the seer for over three-and-a-half years.
A few days ago, another case of rape against the seer came to light, in which he was accused of sexually assaulting four other minor girls. This is the second case filed against the seer under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The complaint was registered by the parents of the children at Nazarabad police station in Mysuru.
