New Delhi, Jun 02, 2016: A 21-year-old Rajasthan law student died when she slipped from a lighthouse in Karnataka while taking a selfie, the latest victim of the growing craze for a perfect self-portrait that is feeding risky behaviour.

Pranita Mehta, holidaying with a group of friends at Gokarna beach in the small temple town in western Karnataka, died on May 29. They were clicking pictures when the Jodhpur National Law University student slipped from the 300-foot lighthouse attempting a ‘perfect’ selfie, reports said Monday.

Mehta’s friends asked local fishermen for help but it was too late. They could only help pull out her body from the swirling sea waters. Gokarn was the third stop for Mehta and her friends who also visited Mumbai and Goa.

The growing selfie fever has led to a series of accidents, many of them fatal, across the country, forcing local administrations to identify certain areas as no-selfie zones.

India in 2015 reported the most number of selfie deaths — 27 — in the world.
