Shashi Tharoor demands probe into how temple scale he was sitting on broke

Kerala, Apr 17, 2019 : Kerala sitting Member of Parliament (MP) from Thiruvananthapuram constituency, Shashi Tharoor was discharged from the Trivandrum Medical College on Tuesday. He was admitted on Monday after he was injured during a Tulabharam ceremony,Yahoo reported.

 

Speaking to the media outside the hospital, Tharoor said there should be an inquiry into how the Tulabharam scale broke. Tulabharam is a Hindu ritual, where a person is weighed against gold or rice grain or fruits, and the equivalent weight of that object is offered as a donation.

On Monday, Shashi Tharoor was taking part in the Tulabharam ceremony at the Gandhari Amman Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. During this ritual, the balance scale that Tharoor was perched on broke and the hook support gave way. He sustained injuries on his head and leg.

He had six stitches on his head and was kept under 24 hours observation at the Medical College.

"My mother who is 83 years old told me that she has never seen a Tulabharam scale break in her life. The DCC President also said the same. He has written to the police asking for a probe. I too agree with that. This should not happen to someone else," he said.

Tharoor, who is UDF’s candidate for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, also said that he will return to the election campaign. 

“Relieved to announce that after a last-minute worry (which took an MRI to resolve), the Trivandrum Medical College has discharged me after a full discussion in the Medical Board. I will have to be extra careful for a couple of days, but am returning to the campaign trail,” he tweeted.

“I remain a committed patron of Government hospitals that perform public service with dedicated staff, highly qualified doctors, good facilities and equipment and no profit motive. My unreserved gratitude to all Trivandrum Medical College,” he added.

 As he was recovering, Union Minister of Defence Nirmala Sitharaman, who is in Kerala for the election campaign, paid Tharoor a visit at the hospital on Tuesday morning. He later took to Twitter to praise the BJP leader for visiting him midst her schedule.

“Civility is a rare virtue in Indian politics - great to see her practice it by example!” he said.

Tharoor even appreciated his rival and LDF’s Thiruvananthapuram candidate, C Divakaran, for enquiring about the former’s health.

“Very gracious of my LDF rival C Divakaran to call this morning to express concern about my well-being. Said he had spoken to the Hospital Superintendent to assure himself I would be ok. “Don’t be demoralised”, he added. I’m not: I’m more determined than ever to see this through!” Tharoor tweeted.
