Singer Anuradha Paudwal joins BJP, cites party’s ’connection with Sanatana’

New Delhi, Mar 16, 2024: Veteran singer Anuradha Paudwal, known for her hit songs in the 80s and 90s and devotional music, joined the BJP in New Delhi on Saturday. Paudwal said she was happy to join a government that had a "deep connection with Sanatan Dharma".

Addressing a press conference, Anuradha Paudwal said, "I am happy that I am joining the government which has a deep connection with Sanatan (Dharma). It is my good fortune that I am joining the BJP today."

Paudwal has sung thousands of songs and hundreds of bhajans in an array of languages. Born in Karnataka’s Karwar, Paudwal made her singing debut at just 19 years with ’Omkaram Bindu Sanyuktam’ in the hit movie ’Abhimaan’. The song was composed by SD Burman, with whom she went on to work several times.

Paudwal made a mark in Bollywood in 1983 with her superhit song "Tu Mera Hero Hai" in the movie Hero. Three years later she went on to win the first of her four Filmfare Awards.

Her peak came in the 1990s, when she enthralled music lovers with her soundtracks in Aashiqui, Sadak, and Dil Hai Ki Manta Nehin. In the 2000s, she focused more on devotional songs. She is also known for her philanthropic work. In 2016, Paudwal set up the Suryoday Foundation, which provides healthcare support for those in need.

In recognition for her work, she was given the Mother Teresa Award in 2011. She was given the Padma Shri in 2017.
