Dubai, April 14, 2011: The eight-year-old daughter of popular Indian playback singer, KS Chithra, has drowned in an Emirates Hills swimming pool. Chithra came to the UAE in connection with the AR Rahman Music Concert in Sharjah.
“The girl was found dead in the swimming pool of a villa in the Emirates Hills," said sources familiar with the accident. Nandana is believed to have been a spastic child.
Chithra and her husband Vijayashankar were blessed with Nandana after nearly fifteen years of marriage. She was born soon after the release of the film “Nandanam”. Thus, the name Nandana. In one of her interviews she mentioned thus, “While recording the song – karmugil varnante chundil, I actually cried my heart out to the Lord. Soon after He gifted me with Nandana.”
A number of Indian celebrities including AR Rehana, sister of AR RAhman, Naresh Iyer, Sayanora, Abdul Salam and others are in town for the show. The playback singer was staying at the residence of Dileep Rahulan, leading Indian businessman. AR Rahman, the Oscar Winning Indian musician is not attending the show.
Known as the nightingale of South Indian music industry, KS Chithra was in the habit of taking her daughter for the music shows as she is a special needs child.
“The door was found open and the girl was found drowned in the swimming pool. Even though she was rescued and rushed to the Jebel Ali hospital, the girl died. The dead body was kept in the Jebel Ali hospital,” said sources familiar with the incident.
Whether the death will affect the mega musical show scheduled for 14th April at 6.30pm in the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, is not known. Leading singers like Hariharan, Chitra, Sadhana Sargam, Naresh Iyer, Benny Dayal, Vijay Prakash, Raihanah, Sayanora, Aslam would be performing AR Rahman’s songs.
The show tickets are sold for Dh1,000 (platinum), Diamond VIP (Dh500), Gold (Dh200) and Silver (Dh75).
“Most probably the AR Rahman show will happen as per schedule, but KS Chithra will not sing in the concert,” said a source. KS Chithra has sung hundreds of hit songs for the Malayalam Tamil and a number of other Indian languages.
