The incident took place over two days on May 30 and 31 before health officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation reached Vivek Nagar Colony and distributed chlorine medicine among the villagers.

The villagers were suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea-like symptoms. The infected villagers are being treated at nearby government and private hospitals.

Local leader Darshan Nayak accused the Surat Municipal Corporation of not providing basic facilities to the people. He also demanded financial assistance for the families of the deceased.

According to preliminary investigation, the villagers fell sick due to the consumption of contaminated water. During inspection, it was found out that there was a leakage in the drinking water pipeline and it got mixed with drainage water.

Surat Mayor Hemali Voghawala took stock of the situation on Wednesday and announced Rs 1 lakh for the kin of the deceased.

Voghawala said water tankers would be provided till water supply to the colony was restored. Water testing vans are also being sent to test the water reaching the homes of the villagers through pipelines.

Kathor village was recently included in the urban area of Surat.
