South Korea sees record high daily spike in Covid cases with 6 lakh new infections

Seoul, Mar 17, 2022: South Korea continues to see an exponential rise in Covid-19 cases amid a wave of Omicron infections. Hitting yet another milestone on Thursday, South Korea recorded over 6,00,000 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily spike the country has witnessed so far.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said on Thursday South Korea reported a record 6,21,328 new daily Covid-19 cases, and a daily record 429 deaths. The latest tally marks a 55 per cent surge in just one day.

With new infections, South Korea’s overall caseload has mounted to 8,250,592, the KDCA said.

On Wednesday, South Korea reported 4,00,741 new daily Covid-19 cases. Most of these cases were said to be locally transmitted.

According to reports, South Korea had its deadliest day of the pandemic on Tuesday with 293 deaths reported in 24 hours.

The South Korean government is expected to announce on Friday whether it will maintain the current social distancing or further relax the measures, a news report said. As of now, an 11 pm business curfew and six-person cap on private gatherings are in place.
