Student who accused Swami Chinmayanand of rape, arrested

Uttar Pradesh, Sep 24, 2019: No action has been taken and no notice has been sent to the law student who has accused former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand of rape, her lawyer Anup Trivedi told news agency ANI on Tuesday, 24 September, Yahoo reported.

“Reports of the victim’s arrest is wrong. Till now we have neither received any notice nor any action has been taken against us,” he said.

He also said that the Court has allowed an anticipatory bail application on the victim’s behalf and the next date of hearing has been fixed on 26 September.

Earlier reports had claimed that the law student was taken into into custody on Tuesday on the charges of ‘extortion and blackmailing’.

After the 23-year-old, who studied in a law college in Shahjahanpur, accused the BJP leader of sexual harassment in a video clip, his lawyers had filed a case of extortion and threat against unidentified persons.

Chinmayanand’s lawyers had alleged that a WhatsApp message demanding Rs 5 crore was sent to Chinmayanand’s mobile phone. The message, they alleged, threatened to make some video clips viral if the amount was not paid.

The UP Police had earlier arrested three youths in this connection, they have now taken the survivor into custody as well. A local court in Shahjahanpur had rejected the bail pleas of the three youths on Monday.


Chinmayanand’s Bail Plea Rejected

An Uttar Pradesh court rejected Chinmayanand’s bail plea on Monday. He was arrested on Friday and sent to 14 days of judicial custody for alleged sexual harassment of the law student. He has been booked under sections 354 D (stalking), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (criminal intimidation), and Section 376C ( sexual intercourse not amounting to the offence of rape) of the Indian Penal Code.

Citing poor health reasons, Chinmayanand has been admitted in MICU Ward of SGPGI, Lucknow, under Prof. P. K. Goel, HOD, Cardiology.

Prof. Amit Agarwal, the Chief Medical Superintendent said that his blood pressure and other parameters are normal, but he is still under observation.


Allahabad HC ‘Satisfied’ Wth the SIT

The Allahabad High Court on Monday, 23 September, expressed satisfaction over the SIT status report in a sexual assault case filed by a postgraduate student against Swami Chinmayanand.

The special investigation team (SIT), which is looking at the allegations of rape against Chinmayanand and extortion against the student and her friends, had submitted the status report on Monday.

The next hearing of the case is on 22 October.
