New Delhi, May 25, 2021:       Decorated wrestler Sushil Kumar faced another setback as the 2-time Olympic medalist was suspended from his job with the Indian Railways until further notice. The decision comes after Sushil was arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old wrestler, Sagar Rana in Delhi.

Sushil Kumar was sent to 6-day police custody along with his associate Ajay Kumar. He was nabbed after being on the run for close to a fortnight in Delhi’s Mundka on Sunday.

A senior commercial manager with the Northern Railway, Olympic medallist Kumar was posted by the Delhi government as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Chhatrasal Stadium for the development of sports at the school level.

"Sushil Kumar was detained in police custody on May 23, 2021 for a period exceeding forty-eight hours. Now, therefore Sushil Kumar JAG/ (Adhoc) IRTS is deemed to have been suspended with effect from the date of detention i.e. 23rd May, 2021 in terms of Rule 5 (2) of (D&A) Rules, 1968 and shall remain under suspension until further orders," a statement from the Northern Railways said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has also refused to extend the deputation of Sushil after his alleged involvement in the murder.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sushil was taken to the Chhatrasal Stadium by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch team to recreate the scene of crime. The wrestler was also taken to his Model Town residence as part of the investigation process.

The crime branch of Delhi Police is investigating from every angle, and they are trying to find out if Sushil Kumar had any relations with gangsters, who may have helped Sushil before his arrest. The Crime Branch team is gathering evidence from the crime scene with the help of forensic experts.

Sushil and his associates have been accused of abducting Sagar from his house in Model Town to teach him a lesson for bad-mouthing him in front of other wrestlers, police had said. Sushil, according to the police, even told a guy named Prince to make a video of the incident and wanted it to go viral in his community so that nobody else dares to offend the two-time Olympic medalist ever again.

Notably, Sushil had confessed to the Delhi Police on Sunday that he was present at the spot but he told the police on Wednesday that he had gone to the stadium only to simmer the tensions between two groups of wrestlers who were involved in the brawl.
