Guyana, June 28, 2024: Rohit Sharma-led India on Friday dismantled England’s lethal batting order to win their semi-final clash by 68 runs. The Men in Blue set a 172-run target for the Three Lions despite losing early wickets.
England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to send India out to bat first, with the Rohit-led side managing a 171 run total on the back of sublime performances from the captain and Suryakumar Yadav. All-rounder Hardik Pandya smashed a late 16-ball 23 to set up the chase.
Chris Jordan was the stand out performer for the Brits, grabbing three wickets in just as many overs, giving away only 37 runs. Rohit Sharma hit a half-century for India [57 off 39], while Suryakumar Yadav fell just short [47 off 36].
India’s bowlers came out with a vengance in the second innings, with Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav grabbing three wickets each in their four overs to dismantle England’s batsmen in no time. The spinners helped Rohit & Co restrict England to 103 in 16.4 overs, while pace wizard Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in 2.4 overs, giving away just 12 runs.
South Africa await India in the final at Barbados’ Kensington Oval, with both teams unbeaten in the competition so far. The Proteas beat Afghanistan earlier in the day, decimating Rashid Khan’s team by nine wickets after the Afghans scored just 56 runs, the lowest total in a World Cup knockout game.
