Mangalore Today News Network

Hyderabad, Friday,Aug 17,2012:In a shocking incident, 10 infants died within a span of 48 hours due to alleged negligence by doctors at the children and neo natal wards of SVR Ruia Government General Hospital (SVRRGGH) in Tirupati of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.

baby deathsTirupati MLA Bhumana Karunakara Reddy said the actual number of deaths was 13 and the doctors were hiding the facts. “There were 10 deaths on Wednesday itself and three more on Thursday. But the doctors are not disclosing the correct number,” Reddy said while addressing the parents of the dead who were protesting in front of the hospital.

Tension prevailed on the hospital premises as the parents of the dead and other patients raised slogans against the alleged negligence of doctors.

“When we asked for help, the staff said that the doctors have gone to attend Independence Day celebrations. By the time they returned, my son was dead,” rued father of Girish Babu, a four-year-old child.

A four-day-old girl child, a two-day-old boy, a premature baby and a seven-month-old baby boy are among the 10 victims.

The hospital, however, said that the babies died because of several complications. “The babies were brought here as a last resort, after the private hospitals failed to handle their cases. Despite providing all the medical support, they could not survive,” superintendent of the hospital, Dr Veeraswamy said while dismissing the allegations that the children died due to shortage of oxygen and negligence of doctors.

Confirming 10 deaths in two days, Veeraswamy, however, said the average number of deaths per day is around three “like any other children’s hospital in the country”
