Kadapa, Nov 19, 2021: At least three people died and 30 others are missing following a flash flood in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday. Several villages were inundated after a dam breach led to the overflowing of the Cheyyeru river. The Swami Ananda Temple in Nandalur was also submerged.
Heavy rain lashed Andhra Pradesh as a depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the coast between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh early on Friday.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.
Massive floods in Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara, left hundreds of pilgrims stranded. The four streets adjoining the main temple in the Tirumala Hills remained flooded. Videos showed people trying to wade though floodwaters to reach higher ground.
Many trees on Tirumala Hills were uprooted, leading to the closure of the road to places like Papavinasanam and Srivari Paadalu.
NDRF and SDRF teams have swung into action to carry out relief and rescue operations. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy conducted a videoconference with the collectors of the rain-battered districts and directed them to step up rescue and relief measures.
