Throat slit by grandmother and abandoned in dustbin, newborn girl Pihu lives to see another day

Madhya Pradesh, February 15, 2025: In a world that sadly could not escape the inhumane act of child murder, the recovery of baby girl ‘Pihu’ is one for the books. After having her throat slit by her grandmother and being abandoned in a dustbin, the girl made a miraculous recovery in the hospital.

The incident took place in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh town, where Pihu was born. In an unimaginable act of cruelty, Pihu’s grandmother slit her throat and dumped the newborn girl into a trash bin soon after her birth, according to police.

Passersby discovered the baby after hearing her cries. After being alerted, police rushed the baby to the Civil Hospital, Pachor police station in-charge Akhilesh Verma said. Civil surgeon Dr PS Parmar said the newborn had a cut on her throat inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon.

A ‘miraculous recovery’

However, the girl managed to survive after the relentless efforts of doctors and nurses at Bhopal’s Kamla Nehru Hospital, according to the Times of India. The cut at her throat was deep but fortunately, it missed all vital veins and arteries. Multiple surgeries were done, where surgeons repaired the cuts and blood vessels.

The baby put up a brave fight for survival as she was put under intensive care. After a month, doctors declared her out of danger and discharged her on Friday.

“It took us more than a month. She had severe injuries, but she braved it and survived. We handed her over to a shelter home in Rajgarh with permission of Child Welfare Committee," said Dr Dheerendra Shrivastav, HOD of Kamla Nehru Hospital.

Police had earlier registered a case and scanned the footage from CCTV cameras to track down those behind the crime. Pihu’s mother and grandmother were arrested for their alleged involvement in the crime.

While celebrations were in order, the doctor provided grim news – that this was the third such case in the past few months. Madhya Pradesh has recorded the highest number of baby abandonments in the country in the last four years, as per official data.

Earlier, a similarly disturbing incident came to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur, where the dead body of a newborn child was threw into a plastic bag and dogs tore apart its head. By the time people could chase the dogs away, they had already eaten the baby’s head.
