Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, April 8, 2015: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Arvind Kejriwal government on a plea challenging the ban on sale of chewable tobacco in the national capital.

tobacco. The High Court asked the government not to take any coercive action against tobacco sellers till the next hearing on May 20.

Last week, the Delhi government banned the sale, purchase and even storage of all forms of chewable tobacco including "gutkha, khaini and zarda" from April 6.

"We have decided to come up with a notification to ban chewable tobacco in all forms from Monday in Delhi. Under this, no one will be allowed to sell, purchase or store chewable tobacco," Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said.

The state Health Department said that there was a Delhi government notification in September 2012 which was in pursuance of series of directions from the Supreme Court to ban gutkha in the capital.
