Tree felling near University of Hyderabad: SC halts deforestation till next hearing

Mangalore Today News Network

Telangana, April 16, 2025: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the wildlife warden of Telangana to examine and take immediate steps to protect the wildlife affected by deforestation in 100 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli near the University of Hyderabad, adding that not a single tree is to be felled up until the next hearing on May 15.

During the hearing, the apex court also questioned the Telangana government’s "tearing hurry" to fell trees, and raised alarm bells about videos showing animals running for shelter.

The SC also raised concerns about the damage done to the environment.

The case pertains to a 400-acre parcel in Kancha Gachibowli, which the Telangana government intends to auction for IT infrastructure development.

The move sparked vociferous protests from students and environmentalists.
