Amethi, May 3, 2014: At a time when speculations are rife that the Congress-led UPA would end up joining hands with the ’Third Front’ post election results, party Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that the coalition would not support any ’Front’ to reach the magic figure of 272.
Rahul who was campaigning in his constituency Amethi, while answering reporters’ queries, said, "we will get the numbers.. you see we will get majority."
The Gandhi scion added that the Congress-led coalition would instead prefer sitting in the Opposition than joining hands with any other forces.
Many Congress leaders including Union Minister Salman Khurshid had set many tongues wagging when they indicated that the party might take or give support to the alternate front to form government at the Centre.
"After poll results, if necessary Congress could consider extending support even to the Third Front to form the government. Not only this taking support from the Third Front could be considered," Khurshid had said.
Rahul’s remarks are significant as they came a day after CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said a repeat of the 1996-like situation is possible and the Congress may be forced to support a government of secular parties at the Centre to keep the BJP out of power
Also, Samajwadi Party leaders have been claiming that they would be getting support of Congress in formation of Third Front government.
