A 26-year-old undertrial brought to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison on Saturday night was found hanging dead in the jail in the early hours of Sunday.

Parappana-Agrahara PrisonRajesh Mocani Bahadur was arrested in connection with an assault case and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days on Saturday. He hailed from Darjeeling.
Police brought him to the prison at 11.15 pm on Saturday.

According to sources, Rajesh was made to sleep in the admission room along with two other undertrials who were brought late to the prison. Newcomers are registered only till 7 pm at the prison. All three were to be allotted barracks on Sunday.

At 4 am on Sunday, a prison guard sighted a body hanging from the window grills of the toilet in the admission room. He immediately alerted the staff, who rushed Rajesh to Victoria Hospital. However, he was declared brought dead. Sources said Rajesh had joined his shoe laces into a twine  with which to hang himself.

Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case.

The case

Rajesh was arrested on Saturday for assaulting the sister of his estranged girlfriend. He had been living in Bangalore for the past three years, working as a cook at a restaurant. He was in love with a girl, also from Darjeeling.

Three months ago, Rajesh quit his job and returned to Darjeeling. His relationship with his girlfriend became strained after he left the City, police said.

Investigations have revealed that a friend had contacted Rajesh and told him that his (Rajesh’s) girlfriend was seeing another man. Angry, Rajesh came to Bangalore three days ago and made vain bids to contact his girlfriend.

On Saturday morning, he barged into the flat where his girlfriend and her sister live. A bitter tiff ensued and in a fit of rage Rajesh attempted to assault the girl with a kitchen knife.

The girl’s sister, who went  to her rescue, was injured in the attack. Rajesh fled the scene. He was arrested following a complaint by his girlfriend with Hennur Police.
Kamal Pant, Additional Commissioner (Law and Order), said the jurisdictional magistrate remanded Rajesh in 14-day judicial custody.

He was subsequently taken to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
