Uniform Civil Code is necessity for modern times, PM Modi in Independence Day address

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, August 15, 2024: In a powerful endorsement of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized its importance during his Independence Day speech today. He argued that laws dividing the nation have no place in contemporary society and must be eliminated.

"The Supreme Court has consistently discussed and issued directives on the need for a Uniform Civil Code, as a significant portion of the country believes, rightly so, that the existing civil code is communal and discriminatory," the Prime Minister stated from the Red Fort, just two months into his third term. "Our Constitution and the Supreme Court have guided us towards this, and it was a vision of the Constitution’s framers. It is our duty to fulfill it."

Prime Minister Modi called for broad-based discussions, encouraging everyone to voice their opinions. "Laws that divide the country on religious grounds must be abolished. They do not belong in a modern society. The times demand a secular civil code, which will free us from religious discrimination," he added.

The BJP’s manifesto for the recent Lok Sabha elections had already highlighted the party’s commitment to implementing a UCC in the national interest. Several BJP-led states have begun steps toward this goal.

In light of these developments, the Prime Minister’s comments signal the government’s intent to address this significant and contentious issue on a nationwide scale during its current term.
