Unnao rape survivor injured, two killed as truck hits her car in Rae Bareli

Rae Bareli, Jul 29, 2019 : The survivor of the Unnao gangrape in which BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, now jailed, is an accused was seriously injured on Sunday after a truck hit the car she was travelling in with her relatives and lawyer.

The rape survivor’s sister said the rape survivor, her two aunts and their lawyer Mahendra Singh were in the car, when it met with the accident in Rae Bareli district.

The aunts succumbed to their injuries, while the rape survivor and her lawyer were rushed to the Trauma Centre at the KGMU in Lucknow.

The four were travelling to Rae Bareli jail from Unnao to meet the rape survivor’s uncle, who is serving imprisonment in a separate case, when the accident happened near Gurbakshganj police station around 1 pm. The two deceased are the wife of the jailed uncle and her (wife’s) sister.

Sunil Kumar Singh, SP Rae Bareli, said according to eyewitnesses and local villagers, an ‘overspeeding truck’ hit the car as it ‘lost control.’ It was raining at that time, the officer said.

The truck which collided with the car, while driving on the wrong side of the road, had its number plate smeared with black paint, fuelling suspicion.

The rape survivor’s sister suspected foul-play and alleged that the accident was a ‘conspiracy’ to eliminate the witnesses and family. She demanded a CBI probe into the accident, calling it murder.

“It’s a conspiracy. A man is sitting inside jail and gets such things done. The administration is not doing anything,” she told The Hindu over phone.

She alleged that Mr. Sengar, an MLA from Bangermau in Unnao, was trying to eliminate the witnesses so that “there is nobody left to run around for the case

UP DGP O.P. Singh said the rape survivor and the lawyer were out of danger. He said the accident did not appear like a “case of conspiracy or intent to murder” but ia probe was on.

The truck was seized and its driver arrested, Mr. Singh said.

FIR registered against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, 9 others

An FIR has been registered against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother and eight others in connection with Unnao rape case victim’s accident in Raebareli.

In the Sunday accident, a car carrying the 19-year-old woman, who has accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of rape, her family and lawyer was hit by a speeding truck in Rae Bareli. While her two family members were killed in the accident, she and her lawyer were critically injured.

Meanwhile, Congress has asked the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognizance of the matter and intervene. The Opposition party accused the Uttar Pradesh government of inaction in the case.

"We demand that the Supreme Court takes note of the incident involving the Unnao rape victim. The ’miscarriage of justice’ taking place... and the voice of victims being suppressed will stop only when the apex court directly intervenes and takes note of the entire inquiry into the Unnao rape case," he said.

The demand came on a day when the Uttar Pradesh government said it is ready to order a CBI probe into the road accident in Rae Bareli. The mother of the rape survivor has alleged that the accident is a conspiracy to wipe out her family.
