Uttar Pradesh, Dec 27, 2019: Nowhere have the ongoing protests against the amended Citizenship Act been deadlier than in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.
The state authorities have taken precautionary measures ahead of Friday prayers, snapping internet services in some cities (including several in the NCR) and increasing security and patrolling.
Here’s a look at the protests in UP in numbers.
1. The death toll in the violence that occurred last week is 19, a home department spokesperson said.
2. As many as 288 policemen were injured; sixty-one of them received firearm injuries.
3. 1,113 people have been arrested across Uttar Pradesh for their alleged involvement in violence.
4. 327 FIRs have been registered, the home department spokesperson said.
5. 5,558 preventive arrests have been made, he said.
6. District adminstrations have issued notices asking for payments for losses caused by arson and stone-pelting. Most of these -- as many as 200 -- were issued in Moradabad, an official spokesman said.
7. 110 notices were issued in the state capital, Lucknow; 34 were issued in Gorakhpur and 29 in Firozabad, the spokesman said.
8. A report from Sambhal said the district administration issued notices to 26 people for their alleged involvement in damaging property.
9. Around 1,200 unidentified people -- including students and staff at Aligarh Muslim University -- have been booked for allegedly violating prohibitory orders by taking part in a candle-light march this week.
10. Over two dozen people have been killed in countrywide protests -- that’s more deaths than have been reported in Hong Kong, where a pro-democracy agitation is in its seventh month.
