New Delhi, May 16, 2014: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi said they accepted full responsibility for the defeat of the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections.
The party could be reduced to its lowest ever tally at 45, with BJP set to secure a simple majority.
"This mandate is against us and we respect it. I am the party’s chief and I accept responsibility of the defeat," Sonia Gandhi told reporters.
"I hold myself responsible for this defeat," Rahul Gandhi also said.
Sonia Gandhi also congratulated the BJP over its win.
"We hope that the new government will not compromise on the country’s unity. I congratulate them," she said.
