India celebrates Vijay Diwas (victory day) every Dec. 16 for the past 46 years to make India’s victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan.

Over 400 students from the Archdiocesan schools in Mumbai and Vasai attended the special event organized by Take Charge in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Board of Education at Dr. Antonio da Silva High School in Dadar suburb.

Take Charge is an initiative focused on increasing the role of the Catholic community in the development and progress of the country by encouraging students and young men to choose career options with the Civil Services and Armed Forces.

The program included members of the Armed Forces giving first hand testimonies, aiming to motivate the young for a career in the defense services.

Maj Gen Ian Cardozo, a hero of the 1971, was the chief guest at the concluding gathering, chaired by Cardinal Oswald Gracias. Cardozo also shared his experiences with students.

“The Catholic community must be in the forefront in participating in the development of our great country,” Cardinal Gracias said while addressing the students.

Organizers of the program said they expect to have an increased participation of Catholic youth in key areas of nation building.

Maj Gen Christopher Fernandes from Army, Air Vice Marshal Michael Fernandez from the Air Force, and Commodore Mathew from Navy addressed the students.
