165th birth anniversary of Kudmul Ranga Rao celebrated at UCM

Mangaluru, June 29, 2024: At a time when untouchability and inequality were rampant, Mahatma Kudmul Ranga Rao dedicated his efforts to the upliftment of Dalits. He believed that only the upliftment of the marginalized communities could lead to the country’s progress, stated Kiran Kumar Kodialbail, President of the Viveka Chintana Committee. He was speaking at the 165th birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Kudmul Ranga Rao organized at the University College in the city, in collaboration with the library, internal quality assurance cell, and various postgraduate departments.

He emphasized that merely providing jobs to Dalits would not change their circumstances; instead, only through education could their conditions improve.Kudmul Ranga Rao worked towards this goal by providing professional training, accommodation for students, and schools for education, striving for the overall development of the entire community. Thus, he earned recognition as a social and educational reformer of the undivided South Canara district.

College Principal Prof. Ganapati Gowda praised Rao’s contributions, noting that while social revolutions were not new to the state, Kudmul Ranga Rao’s contributions were unforgettable for the coastal region. He stood against orthodox rituals and initiated social and educational reforms, spreading the message that all humans are equal. Prof. Jayavantha Nayak delivered the introductory speech. Dr. Sanjay Annarao, Librarian Dr. Vanaja, Dr. Nagratnar Rao, and Dr. Nagratna K. A., along with various postgraduate department lecturers, were present at the event.
