2-day Tagore Film Festival inaugurated in city

Mangalore, Dec 25: The Mangalore-based Sahamatha Film Society and Samudaya organized a 2-day Tagore Film Festival in the auditorium of the Shrinivas Institute of Management Studies in Pandeshwar on the occasion of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary on Dec 25, Saturday.


Four feature films based on Tagore’s “Charulatha” were screened, after which a seminar was held. On Dec 26, “Ghare Baire,” “Teen Kanya,” and “Kabuliwalla” will be shown, and each screening will be followed by talks, discussions, and seminars by prominent scholars.

Nadoja Dr. Sara Abubakker, the renowned litterateur inaugurated the event. In her inaugural address, she that Tagore’s short stories focus on women and preach humanitarian values, owing to which they are of great importance in the modern world, which is losing all values. 


C. Basavalingayya, the renowned theatre artiste and thinker, presided over the event and said that the Ravindra Kala Bhavan was established to commemorate Tagore’s 100th birth anniversary. Stating that the films of the past upheld values and preserved culture, he lamented the fact that modern films focus on scantily clad women and destroy the country’s culture.


Dr. P. S. Aithal, the principal of Shrinivas Institute of Management Studies, and Govind Belgaumkar of The Hindu were also present.
