Mangalore, November 2: Ashwini A. C. of Kundapur, Rebecca Jose of Sullia, Sahana Kumar of Dakshina Kannada, and Kashinath of Uttara Kannada are four of the 10 athletes chosen for the Asian Games 2010, which are scheduled to be held in Guangzhou in China from Nov 12 – Nov 27.
Ashwini A. C. played a great role in winning the gold medal in the 4x400m relay in the Commonwealth Games 2010 held at New Delhi. Rebecca Jose is a 4x100m runner, Sahana Kumari has won the national long jump championship nine times, and Kashinath is a javelin thrower. Satyanarayana, the secretary of Karnataka Athletics Association, informed The Hindu that the names have been officially cleared although a formal letter had not yet arrived.
Javelin thrower Mr. Kashinath won the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games. Ms. Jose, who was in the Commonwealth Games team this year, did not get a chance to run. Mr. Satyanarayana said that other Karnataka-based athletes in the Asian Games team are Vikas Gowda of Mandya (discus thrower), Kodagu Kavya Mutthanna (long jump), H. M. Jyothi of Chitradurga (100m runner), B. C. Nagaraj of Gadag, Pramila Iyer of Kodagu, and Preethi L. Rao of Bangalore (marathon runner).
A lot is expected from the four, who have been chosen from coastal Karnataka.
