Mangalore, August 28: A total of seven H1N1 deaths and 14 H1N1 positive cases have been reported in Mangalore ever since the reporting of the first case a year back.
The deceased are Anisha (24) from Madikeri, Ranganatha (3) from Udupi, Jayashree Prabhu (34) from Kasargod, Sr. Rosie (72) from Mangalore, Meena (22) from Chikmagalur, Gopalkrishna (50) from Mangalore, and Tangacchan (45) from Kasargod.
Dr. Rajesh, the district surveillance officer, said that Sr. Rosie was a cancer patient and that Gopalakrishna had arrived from Hong Kong to visit his ward who is a medical student in Mangalore. The health officials also say that no cases have been reported during the past one week.
Ever since June 16, health officials have tested 56 samples of which 14 showed positive. However, doctors are not conducting tests on all patients who report symptoms of flu. These patients are categorized into A, B, and C; and only the C category patients were being tested.
Category A comprises patients between 5 and 60 without risk factors. Category B comprises patients aged below five, pregnant women, and patients aged above 65. These patients receive Tamiflu treatment for five days. Category C patients are those suffering from chronic medical disorders. These patients are first tested and Tamiflu treatment is given before the results arrive.
