A twist in missing Ramya-Mohammed Love Story

Bantwal, Jan.11: The curtain came down on the drama over ‘missing’ 21 year old Ramya Shetty, with the arrest of the villain Mohammed from a house in Sullia yesterday. Konaje Police have produced them in court in Bantwal today. Mohammed has been remanded to custody for 12 days, while Ramya will be sent to a counseling centre in Mangalore.

 

 

 

Ramya and Mohammed have said in court that they have married according to Hindu rites at Subramanya and Mohammed has converted to Hinduism in order to do so. He has accepted the Hindu name Rajesh Shetty.

Ramya was working in a Supari factory in Mudipu. She fell in love with her neighbor Mohammed, a mason by profession. He is 38 years, married and has 3 children. When she did not return home on December 4, her worried parents lodged a complaint in the Konaje police station, the next day. Police registered it as a missing person case, but took no action. Same day Mohammed was also found missing from his house. The neighbourhood people believed that Mohammed might have kidnapped Ramya and this led to rumours of Love Jihad.

So many protests and complaints continued in so many days under leadership of VHP and Bajrang Dal. A protest rally followed by road block was conducted at Mudupi Junction condemning the failure and inaction of police in tracing Ramya shetty.

Ramya’s Shivaprasad had filed a habeas corpus petition in the high-court expressing his dissatisfaction over the police indolence. He had alleged that Mohammed worked in his house as a mason sometime back. He said in his petition that Ramya had been forcibly taken by Mohammed to convert her to Islam. The court had given police time till Dec 29 to find her. However the police could not trace her until January 10. They were produced in the court today.
