Mangalore, Dec 15: Referring to the ESI Hospital, which was constructed for the benefit of the working class people, as a “death zone,” the Akhila Bharatha Karmika Sangha went on an indefinite hunger strike in front of the hospital on Dec 15, Wednesday. A protest rally from Kottari Chowki to ESI Hospital, via Urwa Store, Lalbagh, PVS, Bunts Hostel, Mallikatta, and Shivabhag marked the beginning of this protest.
The association alleged that doctors hardly treat the workers who are admitted into ESI Hospital; instead, the staff makes the patients wander about for no reason. Several vacancies in the hospital are yet to be filled, and this puts the life of poor patients at risk, they said.
The protestors demand that the dispensary should be kept open on Sundays and that 24-hour service should be provided to patients. They have also demanded the recruitment of permanent doctors, the establishment of a sub-regional office in Mangalore, recruitment of experienced doctors, and the re-introduction of two ambulances, which have been seized because of the negligence of concerned officers.
They warned that they will intensify their protests if their demands are not met instantaneously.
