Mangaluru, Feb. 16, 2025: Renowned Konkani writer Alice Fernandes, popularly known by her pen name Shalini Valencia, was honored with the prestigious Konkani Literary Award by the Konkani Writers’ Association of Karnataka. The award was presented during a ceremony held on Saturday at the Sandesha Foundation in Bajjodi.
Richard Moras, director of the association, presided over the event and emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting and encouraging Konkani writers in Karnataka, particularly those who use the Kannada script. In her acceptance speech, Alice Fernandes expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared insights into her literary journey.
Fr. Rupesh Madtha, editor of Rakno and the chief guest, highlighted the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, warning that it could impact writers’ creative pursuits in the future. He urged writers to adapt and prepare for these changes. Social activist Addy Rego, another chief guest, lauded the association for its efforts to promote writers and their work.
The event also marked the release of Dr. Charles Lobo’s book Mazyavantyacho Suryo. Additionally, recent award-winning Konkani writers and artists were felicitated for their contributions.
Dr. Edward Nazareth welcomed the gathering, while Dolphy Lobo, a member of the executive committee, introduced the awardee. Dr. Anny Castelino read the citation honoring Alice Fernandes, and Henry Mascarenhas, another committee member, delivered the vote of thanks. Lavina Mascarenhas compered the program.
The ceremony was attended by prominent Konkani and Kannada writers, including Fr. Prashant Madtha, former Rakno editor Fr. Eric Crasta, and renowned artist Francis Fernandes.
