Alvas college studentMoodbidri, July 30, 2017: The probe into the death of class 10 student Kavya Poojary of Alva’s High School in Moodbidri has begun as Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) D.S. Rajendra questions her classmates, roommates, hostel staff and the school management, says reports.

Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh had directed Mr. Rajendra to conduct the probe following doubts expressed by her parents. Kavya, a ball badminton player, was found hanging in her hostel room on July 20. A day before the death, she reportedly spoke to her parents.

The police said that the CCTV footage is being collected and they are awaiting the autopsy report.

According to the police, Kavya was staying with five other students in the hostel room. On July 19, she told her mother over phone that she has sports training at 4.30 a.m. the next day. The police, however, said that she went for training only around 6.40 a.m. and then went to school. After returning to her room around 3 p.m., while her roommates left the room, Kavya stayed back and did not go for the evening training.

The police said some of her roommates found her hanging around 7 p.m. As the door was locked from inside, a hostel mate entered the room through a ventilator. The roommates and hostel warden rushed her to a hospital where she was declared brought-dead.

The police said they have recovered some of the materials from Kavya’s room, including the sari used by her to hang herself. The sari belonged to Kavya’s roommate, the police said.

Meanwhile, various student and social organisations here on Saturday carried out a protest demanding a fair probe. Students under the aegis of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad held a protest near the DC office. The Democratic Youth Federation of India and Students Federation of India activists too carried out a protest. The National Students’ Union of India activists submitted a memorandum to the Police Commissioner
