Udupi, April 16, 2012 : Addressing the gathering after receiving the Bannaje Babu Amin Folk Award given away by the Kemmalaje Janapada Prakashana on April 15 Sunday, Dr. Vamana Nandavara, the renowned folk scholar, said that a study of ancient Greek literature has revealed that ancient Greek contains 30 percent Tulu words.

Further, he stressed that it is the need of the hour to translate Tulu literature into English to re-establish its relationship with international languages. If this is not done, Tulu language, culture, and tradition will become stagnant, he added. He also suggested that universities must provide platforms and forums for the development of Tulu folk art.

Alevoor Bogra Sherigar, the renowned naagaswara artist, also received this award.


Dr. Erya Laxminarayana Alva presented the award. Dr. Gananath Ekkaru, the president of the Kemmalaje Janapada Prakashana, presided over the function. The chief guests of the occasion were Umanath Kotian, the president of the Karnataka Tulu Sahithya Academy; Pramod Madhwaraj Malpe, the entrepreneur; Anil Shetty Moodu Alevoor; and Ganesh Amin Malpe.
