BJP announces candidate list for ZP and TP polls

Mangalore, December 17: The BJP has given tickets to only two sitting Zilla Panchayat members Asha Gowda and Venkat Dambekodi. The party has finalized its candidate list for the Taluk Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat polls. Padmanabha Kottari, the president of the District BJP, released the list and announced that candidates for 26 of the 35 ZPs and 113 of the 129 TPs have been finalized and the names of the other candidates will be announced on Friday.

This time, the BJP has issued a ticket to Sunitha Shetty, the wife of Sucharitha Shetty, the former ZP chief. The BJP had helped Sucharitha Shetty, a JD (S) member, to come to power during the previous term. The party has issued a ticket to his wife this time because his constituency Puthige has been reserved for women.

Most of the members this time are new, with the only familiar names being Meenakshi of Panaje who was elected to the ZP in 1995 and Phakeera, the previous Puttur TP president.

The BJP is confident of winning 20 – 25 of the 35 seats in ZP since it has given tickets only to dedicated party workers and young people. Mr. Kottari said that he is confident of the BJP coming to power in all the five TPs.

CM B. S. Yeddyurappa, who is scheduled to visit DK on Sunday, will participate in the party workers’ convention, in which a number of prominent JD (S) and Congress leaders will participate. Sadananda Malli, Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, and Sucharitha Shetty might join the BJP on that day.
