Mangaluru, April 5, 2025: The BJP’s district unit, led by Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, staged a protest on Saturday, April 5, opposing the jammer installed at Mangaluru Jail. The party alleges that the device is disrupting mobile networks in nearby areas, causing inconvenience to the public.
MLA Kamath, accompanied by several BJP leaders, attempted to block the road and stage a sit-in (gherao) near the jail premises. However, the police intervened and took the protesters into custody.
The jammer, which has been active for several days, is reportedly interfering with mobile communication in the vicinity. Local residents, shopkeepers, and businesses have raised concerns, noting difficulties in making emergency calls and conducting online transactions. The device’s location—close to colleges, commercial centers, and clinics—has heightened the impact.
A local doctor recently took to social media to express frustration, citing challenges in attending to patients and handling emergencies due to poor signal reception.
Speaking to the media, MLA Kamath voiced his anger: “I have submitted memorandums to the police commissioner, DG, and home minister, yet no action has been taken. If a BJP government were in power, I would have personally entered the jail and removed the jammer. If the police were truly effective, there wouldn’t be a need for a jammer at all. This is the reality of the Congress-led administration—completely anti-people.”
He also urged district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, currently visiting Mangaluru, to take swift action to resolve the issue.
