Bantwal, Nov 09, 2020: An incident wherein a stranger managed to cleverly rob an elderly woman of her ear rings after making her believe that Covid compensation has been sanctioned for her, has been reported from BC Road on November 9, Monday.
A woman named Jayanthi from Amtady was returning home after paying electricity bill at the MESCOM office at B C Road, when a stranger confronted her and introduced himself as Santosh, son of Sheenappa and made the woman believe that a Rs 1 lakh Covid compensation has been sanctioned. He then reportedly took the woman to the Mini Vidhana Saudha stating a form had to be filled. He also made her believe that a sum of Rs 10,000 had to be paid to avail compensation. When the woman said she would speak to her son, he told her that he had already spoken to him and that the son had asked him to tell her to give her ear rings to arrange the money.
Believing the stranger the woman removed her ear rings and handed it over to the stranger. The man who asked her to wait never returned. Later the woman realised that she was cheated and informed her son. A complaint has been lodged and the police are trying to trace the accused based on the CCTV footage.
