Mangalore, Feb 7: Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy which has been buzzing with activities since its inception one and half years back, came up with Mehendi and cookery competition at Kadri Park on Sunday evening.

Beary women displaying Mehendi designs at Mehendi contest organised by Beary Academy in Kadri Park on Sunday.When most of the previous programmes have been student and scholar centered, the Academy turned up with an idea of arranging ladies centered programme which became a reality on Sunday.


With as many as 60 Muslim women taking part in the cookery contest and 53 participants in Mehendi contest, Kadri Park was literally converted into a ladies corner.

Nine varieties of traditional food items prominently cooked in Beary houses namely Erchiro Pinde, Kuvurolo Pinde, Ettiro Pinde, Basarelo Pinde, Naiyappa, Pudiyampuleppa, Muttero Appa, Kaltappa and Guliyappa were displayed majestically in the competition venue.


Speaking to Deccan Herald, 65-year-old Mariyamma who had come all the way from Nelyadi shared her happiness for getting an opportunity to take part in the contest.

“To take part in the cookery contest at this age is so exciting. I might be a good cook at home, but then it is for the first time in my life I am taking part in a cookery competition. I don’t expect the prize. Participation in itself is a thrill,” said Mariyamma who carried with her Basale Pundi and Guliyappa.


If it is the opinion of a cookery participant, I PUC student from Expert Fatima who was all set to test her skill as a Mehendi designer was bursting with confidence of doing well in the contest. “I have been designing Mehendi since I was in IV Std. It is one my favourite hobby. Though basically I am a good Arabic style Mehendi designer, I will do my best in the contest which is restricted to Indian style Mehendi design,” said Fatima.


Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy Chairman M B Abdul Raheman said, it is for the first time contest has been organised by the Academy for Beary women. “We want to promote the traditional 100-year-old Beary food items which are rarely prepared in houses these days. Our objective is to provide a platform for Beary women to exhibit their talents,” he said.


The top three winners in both the competitions were awarded with prizes.DHNS
