Bed bug menace in sleeper coach bus: Private bus operator directed to pay compensation to passenger

Mangaluru, December 31, 2024: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed a private bus operating firm to pay a compensation of Rs one lakh to a lady passenger who suffered due to bed bug menace in the bus.

The Forum has directed the Seabird Tourist bus operator to pay the compensation to Deepika Suvarna of Pavoor. Deepika who is featured in Rajarani reality show of Colors Kannada along with her husband Shobharaj Pavoor had travelled to Bengaluru on August 16, 2022  after booking a ticket via Red Bus App. However the sleeper coach bus had severe bed bug menace. Bringing the matter to the notice of the driver and conductor did not yield any result. Due to severe itching, Deepika had to be hospitalized. Even Seabird Tourist firm failed to act after bringing the matter to its notice, the complainant alleged and then moved the DK District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum.

After hearing the case, the Forum has directed the private bus agency to pay Rs one lakh compensation to the complainant apart from Rs 18650 as penalty, Rs 850 ticket money and Rs 10,000 as litigation costs.
