Bishop condoles the demise of Bannaje Govindacharya

Mangaluru, Dec 14, 2020:    Rt. Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese has condoled the death of renowned Sanskrit and Kannada scholar Vidyavachaspati Bannanje Govindacharya, 84, who passed away at his residence in Ambalpady, Udupi, due to age-related ailments on Sunday.

In a media release issued by Roy Castelino, Public Relations officer for Mangalore Diocese, the Bishop said, “The demise of eminent scholar, renowned orator and Padmashree awardee of Udupi, Sri Bannaje Govindacharya is huge loss to society. ‘Vidya Vaachaspathi’ Sri Bannaje Govindacharya was one of the foremost Sanskrit scholars of the country, who deeply studied Indian philosophies and blended them with contemporary thought to create awareness in society. As an author and orator, he will be a fount of spiritual awakening for generations to come. Through his discourses, he spread knowledge throughout this land. In his demise, the intellectual arena has been rendered poorer. May his soul be blessed with peace.”

Bannanje Govindacharya had done extensive research on Madhwa philosophy, besides authoring over 100 books and 4,000 pages in Sanskrit on the subject. He had written commentaries on Vedas, Upanishad, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Bhagavata and Puranas. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2009.
